ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Way of Love-Practices for Jesus-Centered Life-Begins January 20, 2019

During the season of Epiphany, from January 20 to March 3, St. Stephens and the Incarnation will be using Scripture readings from “The Way of Love; Practices for Jesus-Centered Life” which was developed by presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry. We will be exploring the themes of learn, pray, worship, bless, go, rest and turn. We hope you will journey with us as we seek to make our lives focused on Jesus in the new year and beyond.

The Diocese of Washington Way of Love Sunday Lectionary (Eight Sunday propers- Introduction and 7 Practices for a Jesus Centered Life) can be found at this link: https://bit.ly/2SJd0Kz

Help needed to distribute Eucharistic Bread and Wine (Eucharistic Ministers) During Holy Communion

Current and aspiring Eucharistic Ministers are invited to attend training on Saturday, February 2nd, from 10am to 11:30am. February 2nd is the feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. We will have a liturgy for the feast with training to follow at 10:30.

Sunday Forums

Sunday forums are about sharing your interests, your work, your passions with the parish. Forums are a means for building community as we get to know one another and learn and grow in our faith. Please consider how you might offer a Sunday forum in the new year. Contact Susan Walker at

˂susankwalker2@gmail.com˃ or speak to her on a Sunday. The next forums are:

  • January 13, Show of the film about R. S. Thomas: Welsh Priest and Poet, by the Rev. Martin Smith. Join us to watch a rare film exploring the life of one of the 20th century’s greatest poets, with beautiful scenes of wild Wales where he spent decades as a parish priest.

  • January 20, The Accidental Pilgrim: My Walk on the Camino, by Mary A. Kelly. Walking the Camino, the Way of St James was not something Mary expected to do in 2018. With pictures, commentary and your questions she will share what she learned as the accidental pilgrim.

  • January 27, Delegates to Diocesan Convention. Come and hear the results of the weekend's convention - resolutions passed, worship experienced, and Bishop Mariann's address.

DC Concert Orchestra to Play Sunday, Jan. 27

The DC Concert Orchestra will play a benefit for Loaves and Fishes in St. Stephen’s nave at 3pm Sunday, Jan. 27. The concert is free, but an offering will be taken up to help finance the congregation’s weekend free hot meal program. On the program will be Raff, Sinfonietta for Double Wind Quintet, Holst, St. Paul’s Suite, and Beethoven, Symphony No. 1.

Still Needed: Two or Three Folks to Say Thank You

Generous supporters of St. Stephen’s Loaves and Fishes weekend free meal program contributed more than $12,000 in response to L&F’s end-of-the-year appeal. Last Sunday’s request for volunteers to write five thank-you notes to the donors produced one volunteer. It would be great if four or five more folks would step up. Please email your availability to Bill MacKaye <wmackaye@reverbing.com> and he will provide you names, addresses, and note cards.

National Symphony Orchestra at Saint Stephen

Each January the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) sponsors a week of concerts in various neighborhoods of Washington (INY, In Your Neighborhood), and this year they are returning to Columbia Heights, U Street, and Shaw, which they last visited in 2012. The week-long blitz includes 30 concerts at a variety of venues, and St. Stephen is lucky enough to host two events. We hope you can join us for one or both of them. The events in our church are:

  • Saturday, January 12, 12-1 pm (Nave): The Asian-American Music Society will host a master class in which pre-selected clarinet students will perform and receive coaching from Peter Cain, NSO clarinetist. All are invited to attend this free event.

  • Monday, January 14, 7pm (Nave): NSO musicians James Nickel and Robert Rearden (horn), and guest musicians Julianna Nickel (flute), and Sophia Kim Cook (piano) perform in the church’s sanctuary.

This week of programming includes two concerts by the full NSO on Thursday, January 10 and Saturday, January 12 at the Lincoln Theatre 1215 U Street. Both public concerts are free to all. For more information on these and all “In Your Neighborhood” events, go to https://bit.ly/2BPmi0l
