Creation of Advent banners in community
Join us for a community activity of working on the Advent Banners on Tuesday, November 20, 7pm (Godly Play room). We will be cutting out letters and symbols under the direction of Paula Collie, Advent banner designer. Bring scissors if possible.
It’s Thanksgiving Pie Time It’s long-standing custom that Loaves and Fishes guests are served pie for dessert at the Thanksgiving meal. But the abundance of those pies depends on you. Please deliver a home-baked or store-bought pie or two to St. Stephen’s downstairs kitchen on Wednesday, November 21, or the morning of Thanksgiving Day, November 22. You can be sure our guests will enjoy.
Odds Show Packed Them In, Raised $4,800
A crowd of 500-plus fans jammed St. Stephen’s auditorium November 11 for a benefit concert by the Odds, a new band formed by guitarist Ian MacKaye and bassist Joe Lally of Fugazi fame and drummer Amy Farina. The show raised $4,800 for the church’s 50-year-old Loaves and Fishes program, which serves free weekend meals to the hungry.
Ian and Amy, Mount Pleasant residents who are husband and wife, have been performing for some time as the Evens. The addition of Joe remade them as the Odds. The St. Stephen’s how was the Odds’ first public performance. Ian, who grew up in St. Stephen’s, credits the church with forming his strong ethical outlook. He is the elder son of long-time parishioner Bill MacKaye.
Advent and Christmas/Epiphany Liturgy Planning Teams
At the September Liturgy Retreat we began the process of forming liturgy planning teams for the upcoming liturgical seasons. Our vision is to have members from each of our worshiping communities on each team. Please contact Father Sam at ˂samdessordi@yahoo.co.uk˃ or Mary Alcuin Kelly at ˂marykelly9748@yahoo.com˃ if you would like to work on the Advent planning team or the Christmas/Epiphany planning team. Once teams are formed we will set up our meeting times for planning. Act soon!
Stewardship Campaign 2019
Thank you for the many gifts of time and treasure you offer to St. Stephen and the Incarnation. In 2018, we've grown in the faith and as a community, through beautiful music, quiet morning prayers, small groups, and in many other blessings large and small. As we plan for next year’s budget, we hope that you will continue your support of St. Stephen’s by making a 2019 pledge. Since we don’t have an endowment or receive regular funding from the wider church, parishioner contributions make it possible to fund our continued life together.
We expect to receive approximately $312,000 in donations from parishioners this year. In 2019, we need to increase our donations by about $22,000 just to continue our current parish operations and make up for the decrease in the diocesan grant which currently supports a portion of our senior priest’s salary. If we receive donations beyond that amount, we will be able to pursue other parish goals (for example, increasing resources for Godly Play, funding initiatives to grow our congregation, or planning for badly needed capital repairs to the building).
Please consider pledging to support our church home next year. If you are renewing your pledge, please consider increasing the amount by 10% to help meet our operational costs or 15% or more to help us meet other parish goals and save for much-needed capital repairs. Sunday Forums
The Sunday Forums are happening each week from 9:15-10:15am in the auditorium. We offer time to gather as a community and focus on some aspect of our faith and our lives. A forum topic can be whatever is part of your journey with Christ inviting us to understand God working in our lives, to better know one another, and build the community of St. Stephen's and the Incarnation. Come hear our presenters and get to know others in the community.
124th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Washington
The 124th Convention will be held on January 27, 2019 at Washington National Cathedral. Registration information for delegates, alternates and clergy will be available December 1. Under the rules of order of the Convention, lay and clergy members must submit proposed resolutions via email to ˂resolutions@edow.org˃ by 5pm on Tuesday, November 27 in order to be considered. Diocesan Latino Ministry Advent Party
The Latino Ministry of the Diocese is celebrating an Advent Party on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 7pm. As it is tradition, latino congregations gather to share prayer and celebration around the Christmas and New Year time. The event will take place in St. Mary Magdalene, 3820 Aspen Hill Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20906. Members of Misa Alegría will participate and share some bring some food to share with other churches of the Diocese.
Registration open for upcoming sessions of Episcopal Latino Ministry Competency
Registration is now open for sessions of the Episcopal Latino Ministry Competency, an innovative eight-day intensive course designed for diocesan staff, clergy, lay leaders, and seminarians to learn cultural competency for Latino ministry. The course will happen on January 20-27, 2019 at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS), at Alexandria, VA. The popular sessions are offered by the Episcopal Church Office of Latino/Hispanic Ministries. The course will be taught by seminary faculty, lay church leaders, and clergy with extensive experience in Latino and intercultural ministry.
