St. Stephen's remembers the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. 50 years ago

April 10, 2018

Following the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 50 years ago on April 4, 1968, four days of riots broke out in Washington, D.C. Most of the rioting occurred in the neighborhood centered around 14th and U Streets NW. St. Stephen's is situated slightly more than a mile northwest of that intersection, and so its members and neighbors witnessed the uprising up-close.

At the 10:30am service on April 8, 2018, members and the choir marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. King and the uprising that followed with a special performance of "This Little Light of Mine" (video by Isaiah J. Poole and Liane Rozzell).

Read more about how St. Stephen's responded following Dr. King's assassination in one of the history panels for that time: Responding to the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
