Tree Planting
On Saturday, April 30, over 30 volunteers planted 16 trees around St. Stephen's and the neighboring Urban Village apartments. The volunteers came from St. Stephen's, Urban Village, and AmeriCorps--and even included two passing Mormon Missionaries, who pitched in for a spell. The trees were donated by the Casey Trees Endowment.
A Casey Trees expert gives a lesson on how to plant.
"Dig the hole deeper," he says--easy words but difficult work in the gravel, clay and 100-year-old construction debris that passes for soil.

From left, Emma Washington (Urban Village), Kaaren Holum and Harry Leich (St. Stephen's) make sure the crepe myrtle they've planted next to the church is mulched.
Five crepe myrtles were planted along 16th Street, next to the Urban Village apartments.
A group of Urban Village residents starts one of the five holes.
The Urban Village crew finishes that tree and soon moves on to another.

Liane Rozzell, Jane Bishop, and an Americorps volunteer prepare a hole.
By the St. Stephen's sign, Barb Neal, Sarah Davis, and Katie and Lia and a friend planted a crepe myrtle.
We planted 10 crepe myrtles, two red buds and four magnolia trees.
And when we finished, the Casey Trees folks looked down Newton Street towards 14th Street and asked us if we'd like to organize the block to do another round of planting next year!
